Zelda M. Thomas

DEGRASSE- Zelda M. Thomas, age 98, of Degrasse, NY, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena.

Her calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Edwards on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 from 3:00-6:30 p.m. Her funeral service is tentatively set for Thursday, January 17th at 11:00 a.m. at the Degrasse United Methodist Church. Zelda was born on February 20, 1914 in the Town of Russell to the late Walter and Bertha (Blanchard) Thomas. She graduated from Knox Memorial School in Russell and from Potsdam Normal School with a degree in teaching.

Zelda worked as a teacher in the Russell district for 33 years, teaching at various one room school houses. She was a member of the Hermon Eastern Stars for 74 years and was also a member of the Degrasse Community Club, Degrasse United Methodist Church, D.C.S.R. Fire Department Ladies Auxillary and was also treasurer of the Russell Senior Citizens. Zelda enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and making arts and crafts.

Zelda is survived by six nieces and nephews, Jean (Cassaw) Jennings, Elaine (Cassaw) Matott, Phyllis (Cassaw) Nichols, Paul Chase, Maynard Meilleur and Betty (Meilleur) Burns. She is predeceased by two brothers, Rutherford and Winifred Thomas and three sisters, Hazel Meilleur, Irene Cassaw and Doris Chase.
