John “Jack” Moulton

John “Jack” C. Moulton, 76, of Milford, died on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on June 27, 1944 in Huntington, NY, the son of Bernard J. and Harriet (Fountain) Moulton. He married Mary Lou Fox on December 19, 1965.

A 1962 graduate of Knox Memorial Central School in Russell, NY, Jack continued his education at Clarkson College of Technology, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1966 and later attended Penn State University, receiving his MS in Chemical Engineering in 1971. He concluded his studies at the University of NY at Binghamton, Thomas J Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, earning his PhD in Systems Science in 2000.

Over his lifetime, Jack held many work positions in various locations including; St. Lawrence County, Director of Data Processing; Clarkson College, Director of Data Processing; Bristol Laboratories; Hartwick College, 1978 – 2006 as Director of Data Processing and Prof. of Computer and Information Science; and Lockheed Martin, Contractor with DCR and Leidos 2006-2017. After retirement from Hartwick College, Jack worked directly for Lockheed Martin and later as a contractor for Lockheed Martin and then Leidos. When asked the Medicare question: “When did you retire?” he responded with “Which time? I have retired three times, at least.”

Jack had many interests and enjoyed them all. He was first and foremost a family man. He loved spending time with and sharing his knowledge with everyone, including his nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Over the years his varied interests included chess, racquetball, painting, woodworking, and many others.

He greatly enjoyed his hunting, fishing, and camping. In support of his hunting, he truly enjoyed and became expert at, reloading his own ammunition. This is an interest he shared with his brother-in-law, nephews, and friends. He belonged to the Crumhorn Mountain Gun Club and taught all three of his grandchildren to safely handle and shoot both guns and crossbows.

His interest in computers started back at Clarkson when, as a student, he took the very first computer course Clarkson offered. This first introduction led him to return to Clarkson as director of the Computer Center and eventually to Binghamton University where he earned his PhD with a thesis in Artificial Neural Networks. In this area of expertise, he was far ahead of his time.

After visiting Michelle and Eric in Turkey, he returned with a love of Oriental carpets. Typical of Jack, he studied handmade carpets, collected carpets, and learned to care for the carpets including cleaning and repairing. There came a day when he declared that he had too much money invested and therefore he started selling carpets in order to support his habit.

Jack is survived by his wife Mary Lou Fox Moulton of Milford, NY; his children, Jeanne Moulton Turner and her husband David W. Turner of Discovery Bay, CA, and Michelle Moulton Vanhove and her husband Eric Vanhove of Alexandria, VA; his grandchildren, Cameron Turner and Amanda Mathews of Shady Cove, OR, Jay Turner of Shady Cove, OR, and Helen Vanhove of Alexandria, VA; several nieces & nephews, Sharon Peabody and David Peabody of Clare, NY, Sheldon Hall and Fran Hall of Clare, NY, and Satu Hall of Monticello, KY; sisters- & brothers-in-law, Kay Doll and Glen Doll of Gurnee, IL, Sue Ziemba and David Ziemba of Jamesville, NY, Charles (Beaver) Fox of Russell, NY, and Robert Fox and Deb Fox of Denver, NC.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Loretta Moulton Hall Sharpstene; and a nephew, Steve Hall.
